I was getting out of my car today and caught my shoe on the pedal, thus creating a decent sized gash/fray in the leather of the captoe. Are my shoes ruined? Can it somehow be sanded off? Here is what it looks like.

A very aggressive and detailed polishing will help alot.
This is what patina is all about!

I am not an expert, but I don't think sanding sounds like a good idea at all. I think your best bet will be to disguise it as much as you can - give a good coat of leather conditioner and then wax and buff and wax and buff and wax and buff as best you can to fill the cut and literally gloss over the whole thing.

Real shoe experts may have better advice.

Sell them on the B&S forum for $20...they're a 10D right?

Really though, take 'em to a cobbler and see if they can be repaired if that's what you want. Based on the pictures, with regular care of conditioner and shine over time that scar will just become part of the patinated character.

Don't sand. Just wipe it with a damp cloth in case there is dirt in there, dry, then wax.

I figured sanding would be a no no. Should I maybe try to rub the toe with some black shoe polish to darken the area?

No! That will just draw attention to it. clean it up with some conditioner, polish it as normal, and call it wabi-sabi or whatever.
