The Patent leather plain-toe balmoral seems like a good choice. Any suggestions on where to look? Brands? Given the frequency that I'll wear them, I don't want to spend too much.

Ditto. I get the pumps but they aren't for me. This site has made my girlfriend question my sexuality enough. I think wearing pumps would be the last straw.

nordsrom rack recently had a bunch of patent leather AE lace up shoes for under $100, there're worth buying to avoid renting.

You can find them cheaper on ebay, and new.

There was a post by Etutee (I think) a while back either here or on LL where he mentioned black patent shoes with an adelaide as an elegant solution. Shipton & Heneage has a very nice-looking version on their French website. It's the Piccadilly Noir Vernis model. Not necessarily the best value, but pretty sleek.
