1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

(I'm actually asking seriously) Is it not possible to reverse engineer a last from a closed shoe, as a tailor might do with say, a Huntsman or Caraceni coat?

Also, I wonder what intellectual property laws govern shoe lasts? Can someone actually be sued for using an identical last to a competitor? There is hardly any intellectual property protection of designs in apparel, after all, (see Inditex's quarterly earnings for evidence) so why should it be different for footwear?

In response to all the questions about 'so you got the last, what then,' let's imagine there exists a maker of some repute that's fallen on hard times. Florsheim, let's say. Or Cheaney. They come out with a new 'City' line of sleek lasts, patterns and finishing. People rave. The maker can now compete in a new category.

Believe me shoe lasts and shoe design are covered by intellectual property laws. However the difficulties lie in pursuing claims & finding satisfactory remedies.

No. A particular shoe lasts could be roughly simulated by looking at a shoe but nuances and details and even some critical topography and parameters will almost surely be missed.
Probably an old fashioned and easily dismissed or mocked notion, but there is such a thing as honourable behavioral. If you respect someone or someone ideas/work, you don't rip them off. You can be influenced, but the energy...intellectual as well as physical... has to be your own.

There are few decent last makers left these days.

    In Northampton, only Springline remains.
Michael does not strike me as the kind of person to screw a client over, in the process destroying his reputation, in order to copy one of their lasts for somebody else.

I imagine this will be the same if you go to Italy or France´s last makers.
