I've followed the much longer thread on this forum addressing shoe shining efforts and it was a great help.

I just shined my first pair of shoes (been going to a place to get them shined) and I wasn't too impressed with the result and wondered as to why.

I have a very plain pair of black captoe shoes. I used Lexol cleaner on them first, followed by Lexol leather conditioner, Kiwi neutral wax, brushed off the kiwi, buffed with cloth ... and then added another coat of kiwi with a little bit of water and buffed again. The result was a good shine, but not as shiny as I had thought.

Suggestions?

Also, I have trouble buffing the sides and near the soles of my shoes. What do you guys do to give a good buff to those areas?

A couple of things to try:

leave the conditioner to dry before adding the polish.

leave the polish to dry a bit more before brushing.

try a different cloth - some work much better others.

Try the final buffing with a nylon panty hose (not kidding) rolled in a ball. Just a bit of RHAAA (mist from your breath) and a good buffing, and you will have a near perfect spit shine! For the rest, do what MoK said! Also use colored wax instead of neutral.

Why are you using neutral wax on black shoes? Using black wax may give you better results.
