Shoe help! - Have I damaged my shoes?

I have begun focusing on taking better care of my shoes, so the other day when I went to polish my black pair, I first tried to clean them very well and applied some HS Trask Buffalo Butter that some shoe salesman had once sold me.

It definitely soaked into the leather and the shoes feel much more supple. BUT after cleaned off the excess conditioner and I applied two coats of polish, I still get a relatively dull look. Here are my specific questions:

1 - should I have waited longer to apply the polish - waited about 10 minutes?
2 - the Kiwi polish was a bit dry and I really had to work it in - would that impact the polish?
3 - did the buffalo butter do something to the leather so it doesn't shine as highly now?
4 - more likely, did I just do a poor job of polishing?

Sorry for the noob-ness of the question, thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry - I didn't take any pictures - they definitely have less of a shine than before they were cleaned.

Wait a day or two and re-polish your shoes. You will get better results!

Let it dry (at least one night), brush well after, apply polish! If after brushing it remains somewhat dull or greasy, it means that you had put too much, no worry, it will disappear in time!
