That's one of the reasons why good makers make the tongue and Vamp as one piece. In cases for some reason this is not done I have seen Vass do a sort of triangular stitch b/w the vamp and tongue rather than a straight line. I guess it depends on the individual maker.

Well, yes. So weak that it automatically tears?...depends on the leather and how thin it is skived.

The XXX's, BTW, are stitches---hand stitches that not only secure the tongue to the lining but prevent the leading edge of the tongue from rolling up.

But the real anchor is the stitch above the cross-stitches...that stitch not only draws the facing snugly together and holds them together, it secures the tongue to all thicknesses of the upper.

I don't believe that making the tongue and vamp all as one piece can be done on an oxford.

Haven't seen any of my oxford shoes with tongue and vamp in one piece. Not RTW. Not bespoke.

I make derbies and chukkas with tongue and vamp being one piece. Only cutting/clicking considerations or the desire to make the job easier and quicker (expediency) would prevent a maker from doing that, esp. on derbies.

Correct, sometimes the small piece of leather at the end of the lacings is used to strengthen the stitching with the Tongue.

This is a good example of how much blobbier lasts look when you are looking down at them on your feet as opposed to looking at them on somebody else. That F looks like a blob in the top pic, but very nice in the bottom. Always good to examine shoes on your feet in a mirror.

Talk about shoe damage to PR...Bespoke shoes scandal claims scalp of Hollande aide!

Paris (AFP) - A close advisor to Francois Hollande resigned on Friday after allegations about a conflict of interest and his extravagant lifestyle dealt a fresh blow to the beleaguered French president.

In a statement to AFP, senior political advisor Aquilino Morelle, 51, said he was stepping down but denied any wrongdoing in a scandal that has put the spotlight on his collection of 30 pairs of bespoke shoes.

"I have decided to put an end to my duties as an advisor to the presidency of the republic... to be entirely free to respond to these attacks," Morelle said.
