Not a tab - these are boots with canvas tops. The thing that looks like a tab is a strip of suede which runs to the top.

I agree. Very nice shoes but, for some inexplicable reason, JL seems to think they look better with extra material that no one wants or needs.

Guess it could be changes in anything from the diet of the animals to the way shoe-makers apply stains/color, but I read somewhere that tanning processes have been 'improved' by using combinations of chemicals that require less time 'in the vat' - from years down to 6 months.

The best RTW finish IMO is EG (and Lobb Paris, altho I know it only from pics) and the former uses crust or semi-crust chrome-tanned leather.

Could you explain what crust leather is please?

I don't think i've ever had it in a shoe.

I quite like the aniline leather i have in very shoes.

Others here are better informed than me, but crust = tanned but not finished - because it comes to the shoemakers in a crust (the end process of tanning) state (or semi-crust) the color has not yet been applied. It means EG (and AS AFAIK) can apply their own awsm antique finishes and colors.
