The skin/book matching is so good. It reminds me of my vintage Nettletons.

These are very similar to my sentiments on these. The drawback of vintage shoes is that often the styles are just a bit "off". While some styles are truly timeless, you are often presented with an "extreme". To correct my original post, these are early 1960's, rather than late 1950's (as I originally thought). Sleeker styles were coming in vogue at that time. Note the 4 eyelet lacing & the ULTRA SLIM waist (only 2 3/8 inches). These take that style to the extreme. These are the "anti-gunboat" to be sure.

THAT'S why I bought them. These are some of the nicest Alligator skins i've seen. I just wish they were Tougher looking.

yes i know!! but having been to the shoe museum in northhamton a few times i know this is not the case so much with english shoes, but with a lot of your vintage shoes being american is seems they are alot more femine - thro the skin looks nice

Can you tell me how you are dating the Bostonian alligators? Is the lining half leather, half cloth? Can you tell me the inner numerical markings?

I have a pair of unworn Bostonians in shell that I think are probably around the same age. Be interested in comparing the numbers.

Come on now, that's not quite fair. The UK has CERTAINLY put out some "sex-questionable" footwear in the last 3/4 to 1/2 Century. I remember some John Lobbs (at least 5 pairs) that were on the BS last year that had higher heels than my wife's pumps. Styles change all the time, and "cutting edge" makers seem to push the envelope in an effort to lead the "style movement".

The US, as a point in fact, has actually produced some of the Roughest & Toughest shoes ever produced. Especially in the 1940's and 1950's. The 2x sole Florsheim Gunboat has lasted well over 50 years now. Thom McAn of the past made quite a few "masculine" models.

While the sleeker styles of Foot Joy, Edwin Clapp and the like were more popular (and embraced by most US makers in some form):

There were also some REAL "Bulldogs":

    & THESE:

I am still searching for this Giant Muthah.

Although the style (ultra wide welt & 3x thick sole) isn't so popular now, SOME modern makers have built on this legacy...

JM Weston 3x Sole Wingtip, which i believe, shares the same last as the legendary Chasse.
