I saw Preston on Elegant Oxford mention that the factory finish on shoes can cause over creasing. It's possible you just melted that finish down to remove the crease.

It's a 10+ year old shoe that I neglected but it must be my beginners luck 😂

when I was in military I would use hairdryer but that's to heat up the wax (though make sure you don't overdo...)
