SFers,
Reading through some of the posts on footwear and care, I thought of my routine for care for my daily wear shoes and thought I would ask a question about it. This is a somewhat narrow issue, as I writing about how I care for shoes the evening of / morning after having worn them. Here goes.
So I wear a shoe throughout the day. When I get home, I take them off (obviously) and instead of putting shoes trees directly in the shoes I use either a foot spray or sprinkle in some medicated foot powder to help with odor prevention. I then let the shoes dry overnight before inserting shoe trees until the next wear (at least a week later, as I purposefully have enough of a rotation to not wear each pair more than once every 7 days, other than casual pairs I might wear back-to-back on Friday/ Saturday). My thought here is that using the spray/ powder helps the shoes dry out "more naturally" overnight, and then inserting the shoes trees after they have dried out makes it more likely the shoe trees themselves won't get funky - without any loss of leather tensile strength as they will be in shoe trees for at least the next week.
On the flip side, I am aware that one argument is to insert shoe trees as soon as possible, as the cedar supposedly helps draw out moisture from the shoe - and the trees are aromatic themselves which helps with odor. So I'm aware I could be wrong, and open to changes.
For the record, I don't have any issue with excessive smell or anything (I mean, I sweat in the summer but that's normal - especially when NYC is disgusting), but I since I have shoes I have had/ want to keep for 5+ years this is the best way of maintaining them day-to-day.
Am I on the right or wrong track?
