I am shopping around for a new shirtmaker (besides Jantzen). Ascot Chang (Peninsula Hotel) and David's Shirts (Mandarin Oriental Hotel) were recommended.

Since I intend to upgrade from Jantzen, I thought I might as well go for the best shirtings, such as Alumo. What surprised me was the difference in price between these two makers. AC quoted HKD1450 for Alumo 100s. DS quoted HKD1200 for Alumo 140s.

DS seems like great value. Has anyone here used both these shirtmakers to appreciate the difference between them?

Generally, AC overprices TM, DJA, and Alumo fabrics. Having said, AC's shirts are sewn better. Initials are embroidered by hand. I would recommend going to AC for cheaper fabrics and if you want TM, DJA, and Alumo fabrics, go to David's in TST (Avoid the one at the Mandarin don't ask me why).

Yes, I have. There is no match between Ascot and David's. Ascot Chang is far better. Also, I had a bad experience with the owner of David's who is an arrogant bas----. If you are willing to pay an extra HK$880 (approx. $120) per shirt, Ascot Chang will also do an almost 100% hand stitched shirt for you. The minimum is three but the wait is longer (about six weeks). Even if you don't order these hand stitched shirts, the regular custom shirts are just great. I have been to this establishment for over 15 years and never had a problem. Hope that helps.

never tried AC. But I have tried David's (the one near the mirrarmar) good choice of materials..but crappy buttons. I did not like the end result of my shirts. maybe i was not specific enough, and they were too baggy in the body. i also asked for 2 buttons on my cuffs, these cuff buttons were not aligned properly with the button holes on both shirts.

cost HK$800-900 per shirt - which is 2.5-3 times the price of jantzen..which i would say has better worksmanship and detail if not quality of material.

for the a few more $ - you can try A Man Hing Cheong - materials are nice if abit limited, but they have all the usual choices...also the best button i have come across so far. also the best shirt i have made in HK.

I agree with you. Moreover, I am avoiding David's shirts in general, not just the Mandarin Hotel store.

Having tried AC and DS of recent, I can confirm that AC win hands down with respect to fit and workmanship.
