What do you guys think about wearing a shirt and a vest (three piece suit kind of vest)?
Maybe its looks too much like a waiter-outfit

Something like this, but maybe with some jeans instead.
Maybe the vest can be worn without the tie also? Or do you think that the vest should only be worn with a full suit?

It can look good but on much fewer people then lets say a button down shirt with rolled up sleeves so I don't really see the point. You want to dress official wear a sports coat or a suit.

If you work at a bar and would be bringing me my drinks, then sure.

I think this can be very stylish. The trick to avoiding the "hired help" look is to create fairly high contrast between the vest and the rest of the outfit, especially the slacks. And by contrast I mean color or level of formality. Vest plus jeans, for instance, can look great, as can a navy chalkstripe vest with crumpled stone chinos.

If you wear this look in public and are NOT providing some kind of valet or food-and-beverage service, people will think you are either
A) a douche

or

B) some kind of Ashton Kutcher or Justin Timberlake wannabe

or

C) both.

You should probably sport a Trilby hat for good measure, and make sure not to carry too much cash or any important credit cards because you are likely to get an asswhuppin.

I was a bit surprised to read this, as I was just about to order a matching vest to go with my 2-piece. Do you think would look decent to wear a matching vest with tie at work? (like photo 1, previously posted on WAYWRN). Or the Tom Cruise look below for casual Fridays?

Looks great if you're justin timberlake.

It works if it is part of a 3-piece suit and you happen to remove the jacket temporarily for whatever reason.

If you're at work though you would probably have your jacket off for most of the day (and may not even put the jacket on). Do you think it would look bad to just wear the vest and pants at work?

I have various odd vests that I wear with jeans and trousers (with or without a sportscoat). I have some in silk, tweed, linen, cotton, and wool.

I think the 3pc-without-jacket looks a little lame.

I think for the 2 - 18 year old demographic, it can look good. Otherwise, no.

Fine as said above as part of a 3-piece suit if you've just taken off your jacket. Esp. the pinstripes leave little doubt as to the fact.

... particularly if the waistcoat is too short, the trousers have too low a rise AND you wear a friggin' belt like in the photo above. It is a horrible look.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
