Shirt fitting question

Forgive the newbee question. I'm getting a suit and was measured with a 16 shirt size, but my belly is
slightly larger than my chest. Should I get a larger neck size, say 17 17 1/2 to make sure it fits.
Thanks,
Don

I'm a little confused by your question.

Are you having a shirt made? Or buying one off the rack?

If you are having a shirt made, they should have measured for neck, stomach, and everything else. From your question it seems you are buying an off the rack shirt, in which case you should try them on to see which fits.

Is it from a company/maker that you can access in person to try on? Generally if your neck measured at 16 you should probably get a 16. Some OTR shirts are cut fuller in the chest and stomach. Some are more tailored. If you measured at 16 and buy a 17.5, you are going to swim in that shirt.

What brand are you looking at? Someone here might know the fit characteristics.

I'm getting a Stafford mens travel easy-care broadcloth stretch fitted
dress shirt.

FWIW I would spend a little more money and get yourself a better shirt - Spier and Mackay are a great budget pick. However if you want to stick with the Stafford one I would look for one that isn't marked as "Fitted" if you're concerned about the stomach fitting - look for one that's "Classic" or "Traditional" and get your correct neck size. It seems like they sell these everywhere so you could always head over to the mall and just try a couple on. Or order multiple and return whichever don't fit.

You should likely order your neck size. Be sure you can return if its wrong. But don't order "fitted" get something regular.

Are you not able to get to a store to buy a shirt in person you can try on?

Thanks for the replies. Glad you folks set me strait.
I'll look for a "classic" shirt.
