Shirt color darker than suit?

Sometimes I do this. Is there some steadfast rule out there
on shirts being darker than the suit color? It would seem to open up some options and I avoid the extremes of blacks / whites. (For example today -pairing browns and rust colors with a grey / brown plaid suit.)

Een Kazakhstan the white shirts is for womens. Big men wears the smokey color shirts. On a serious note I have worn a darker shirt before. Just depends on the combination, really.

I tend to think the combination is for very casual situations (e.g. clubbing), but I like your ensemble.

The rule I follow, is this: my tie is always darker or at least as dark, as my shirt.

I'm pretty fond of silver ties on french blue or royal blue shirts, personally.

I find your look acceptable, other than the off center dimple, and I don't really care for how you folded the pocket square. Minor quibbles.

What would you wear with seersucker?

Personally, I like to pair colors that appear together in nature or in common human experience. Rust and grey, you'll often find at shipyards and wherever there is visible metal and salt. You can get away with some flavorful combinations involving an olive suit during fall in NE.

If you're ever stuck for a color combination, go pick up some flowers whose color compliments your complection, and see if you can design a look around them.

Other than that, I'd like to think anything goes with color (patterns, maybe not). The only rule is what mood you want to create.

Or whatever Manton says...

I do it on occasion. While not suitable for the more formal business situations, I have no problem with it,

While it doesn't look so bad, a lighter color shirt would look better imo. I have worn a black or navy shirt with a grey suit but only for evening out type situations. The only exception to the shirt-lighter-than-suit rule I can think of that would be acceptable for daytime wear is a tan or off-white summer suit with a french blue shirt.

I agree. I think it is more acceptable in social/casual occassions, not really in a proffessional one.

However, I think you pull it off pretty well, and I wouldn't feel out of place going to work like that on, say a Friday, when I am not going to meet any clients/dealers.

I would not hesitate to meet my dealer while wearing a shirt darker than my suit.
