Shirt alteration advice

I have many regular cut long sleeve Ralph Lauren shirts that contained way too much extra fabric, so I am thinking about having them altered. I'm guessing that the tailor would need to take-in a total of about 6 inches from the sides to make them much more flattering.

If they remove 6 inches just from the sides, will the arms look too baggy in relation to the torso after the 6 inches is removed

Will buy slimmer cuts in future, but trying to figure out how to resolve the issue with my current shirts

If you have "many" of them they could be expensive depending on how much your tailor is charging you.

$15.00 per shirt to take-in sides - Hence my concern that the torso will look slim and the arms will look baggy relative to torso

YOu will need to also take in the sleeves.

just make sure the tailor narrows the sleeves as well
they will just cut out the seam and restitch.

that is a lot to take out of the shirt.
you will have too much fullness around the upper back that can not be removed.
the yoke may also be too wide

try one first before you possibly ruin all of your shirts

agree. try 1 and if you don't like it, start buying better fitting shirts.

Depending upon their condition, it may be cheaper to buy new shirts that fit from jump.

Thanks for all the replies - I was also trying to determine in my own mind if purchasing new shirts would be more cost effective (as well as look much better) than altering current ones

Which line of Ralph Lauren?If they're lower than black label it might be easier and more economical to sell them and buy new ones that fit in B&S or Ebay.

By "regular R.L." do you mean Polo Ralph Lauren?If so and they're made in Asia or the Pacific rim I definitely wouldn't spend the money on alterations.

If you have a Polo Outlet or Marshalls nearby you may be able to get some Custom fit ones $35-50 or so. The cost effective option might be to sell your current ones on eBay or elsewhere and buy proper fitting "Custom Fit" ones.

Try a test first though. I'll be doing the same tomorrow, dropping off a Large Custom Fit PRL Oxford to see if my Chinese tailor can make it cut more like a BB Medium Extra Slim Fit which I'll leave with her as a guide. She also charges $15 to take in sides which I believe usually will also include the sleeves.
