    Anybody seen anything on these?

I happened to see a large ad they took out in the WSJ last weekend and did a little poking around this morning.

Apparently someone has resurrected the Shinola brand and is making watches, bicycles, and leather goods, all manufactured in Detroit. The "Runwell" pictured is their debut watch, with a US-assembled quartz movement of Swiss parts. A bit of digging uncovers that the company behind the new Shinola is a Dallas-based company called Bedrock Manufacturing, which has recently acquired Filson. Despite the "manufacturing" name, it does appear Bedrock is more of a PE firm than a manufacturer, hence the relative sophistication of the launch.

Anyways, it seemed like the kind of thing SF should have an eye on. US Manufacturing, quality goods, Detroit storyline is a nice feel-good. I think the watch is very handsome, definitely very American in styling, and the Horween strap scores SF bonus points.

I do wish it were a mechanical movement, and I can't help but feel some cynicism about the corporate backing, but hey, that's American styling too.

Saphire crystal and cordovan straps for preorder on Barneys, movement is iffy but that is some expensive parts on a cheap watch

A saphire crystal costs like $40. Cordovan strap is nice, but if the movement sucks, whats the point.

I recently did a factory tour at Shinola where I saw how much of Detroit you can really find in their products - surprisingly little.

I would rather spend a little more money and get a better watch with proven quality behind name. I don't understand this upcoming of no name watches that are priced so high.

Remember reading the founder of Shinola was one of the original founders of Fossil watches

Way oversized and way overpriced. And the whole "American" angle is a little precious given the absence of US-made components.

I don't necessarily see the hate on these watches. Priced similarly to a Movado with less history. No doubt it isn't a Breitling but its a quality watch. Its also nice to see a watch of this level with a Horween band rather some crappy band found on watch's at your local Macy's. Sure its quartz but 90% of the watch's you see are most likely just that, quartz.

They are backed by investors who spends a ton of money on marketing. They're not remotely American made... just assembled in America.
