perhaps one of our tokyo based members can add some insight to my query:

what is the significance of the hoards of young men who seem to populate shinjuku district who all wear the same single breasted black suits, white open collared dress shirts, white leather dress shoes and carrying white umbrellas with all the same quasi-shag cut hair style?

it's rather impressive en masse (not as fashionista as the harajuku district) but is it a calling card for something that i didn't understand?

Speaking of Japanese guys, I've been meaning to scan a few pictures from Fruits for you. Hey mister. I am COWBOY... get it? [IMG] Hey Alex Kabbaz, can you shorten these sleeves? [IMG] He's almost got it right; If only we could get this guy to polish his EG's every once in a while... [IMG]

I LOVE Fruits. Me and my friend will sit and look at those for hours. They're so neat, even when the styles are completely absurd.

Do you have a picture, hermes?  I go through Shinjuku 2-3 times a week and haven't seen them. I have seen quite a few hosts looking for clients. Male hosts sorta fit the description.

I think Janpanese is the only race who loves to bring fantasy to life. Just look at their anime, city buildings, gadgets, etc ..

i haven't developed my film yet and although i wasn't brave enough to blatently ask them to pose, my wife may have captured them taking a streetscape pic

in the two weeks i was there, i went to shinjuku likely 6 times and each time they were there, amassed mostly on the sidewalks just outside of shinjuku station, the northwest entrance i believe (if you were to walk from the corner of shinjuku-dori and meiji-dori where isetan and mitsukoshi are and walk towards shinjuku station, that area of the station before the train track overpass - not the side where keio and odakyu are)

anyway, my initial thought was young yakuza recruits but now that i think about it, there were at least a few women milling about - maybe escorts are correct then

Not exactly escorts... these guys are typically working for some sort of bar/club/service. Some explicitly try to recruit girls to work for dating services, etc.. others might actually be 'hosts' which is a form of escort, but only work at a specific club. I believe there was an article in Forbes about 'the top' Japanese host who made over $1 million a year. He wasn't even that good looking, but I bet he could flatter women like there's no tomorrow

Anyhow, the suits are rented from their company I've heard. As for the white umbrellas, those are everywhere in Japan because they are cheap and disposable. I personally have 3.

They do sound like hosts to me, though all of them in white shoes sounds a bit odd. I'd agree with Gatsby on the umbrellas though. You can buy cheap vinyl umbrellas at convenience stores for $10 or so, and I would imagine that many of the host clubs have piles of them. I understand that the young hosts are sent out to drum up business and develp a client base. Perhaps they were handing out little leaflets and/or inviting women to come in and enjoy their club. Here are some photos of fellas that look like hosts to me: http://images.search.yahoo.co.jp/bin....1&to=15 http://www.jjm.w3lab.com/00man....i-f.htm http://www.jjm.w3lab.com/00man....1-p.htm http://www.jjm.w3lab.com/00man/aichi...rgo/ohga-f.htm http://www.jjm.w3lab.com/00man....o-f.htm

Holy crap... if I was addicted to methamphetamines and decided to put on massive amounts of eyeliner, I could show these bastards up any day of the week.

    I miss high school.

pic #1 is the hair style spot on
pic #4 is a good representation

the white leather shoes is what stuck in my mind the most as it was so "fascinatingly" odd but matched so well with the white umbrellas ......

no leaflets that i can recall
although women kept handing me kleenex packs with escort ads on them

    thanks again for your help
