Which color would you prefer if you could only have one pair?

Some say that burgundy shell loafers are canonical, but brown is nice too. Tough choice

Color 8 by virtue that while brown calf looks as good if not better than brown shell, burgundy calf just seems off.

While I do not own said shoes, I feel that color 8 seems to work well when black shoes would be appropriate.

I much prefer burgundy. I find there is a richness to the color as compared to brown in the shell.

Burgundy/oxblood for shell, brown for suede.

Voting for brown shell. I can't explain why. But for some reason, I'm always drawn to wearing my brown shell over my burgundy shells.

facepalm! You get to ask the question, but you don't get to dictate the content of the responses. As some people group burgundy and color 8 together, I made the distinction as to my preference. If you don't find that a helpful response, I'll just have to try to cope with the disappointment.

Dark brown for me. I cannot stand burgundy shoes personally.

Maybe I can even out the apples and oranges. If given a choice of the Alden Tassel Loafer in Shell Cordovan or Dark Brown Calf - which do you go with? Granted, I realize it isn't this simple and price variations, etc. but wanted to get your guys input. I have a pair of Burgandy Grayson's I picked up a long time ago but the way the leather and bent and creased (if with rest, rotation, and trees) is driving me batsh!t crazy. Much prefer the way shell ages...

Personally, Alden's calf is forgettable at the prices they charge, when you can get Mallorca or Northampton shoes for less. I see them as cordovan (and suede) specialists.

You mean Alden's calf or shell is forgettable and current pricing? Or both? Looking for a good tassel loafer that could be pulled off with a brown suit. Not sure I could swing cordovan/#8 color.

^ I assume he means that for the $450 or so they charge for calfskin shoes, there's really nothing special about them and there are better options in that price range. The comment about them as shell / suede specialists suggests he thinks their products in this area are worthwhile.
