97628 is the identical model in corrected grain.

I don't own any in CG, but to see how different they look from the pair under discussion, check out eBay item #310199798284.

It's ironic that Florsheim cast their CG version as not only Imperial grade but as Royal Imperial

That's what I always thought too, until I owned a pair.

And yes, the finish Florsheim used on their shell was very uniform, entirely different than Alden or any other maker I've seen. It has an opaque quality to it, almost as if it were paint. In time the finish mellows to reveal something more pleasing to the eye.
