What do I need to know about buying a shearling coat?

I picked up a carcoat length La Matta shearling at Daffy's before Christmas for $400. It's very lightweight with a dense 3/8" black pile.

Is it possible to go wrong with a La Matta?

Pardon the neurosis and thanks in advance for the wisdom.

Never heard of La Matta, but shearling is shearling. I have a couple of them, from some obscure brands, and they do just fine.

As long as it's quality, sewn well, and fits you the right way, it should work.

Good price, La Matta shearlings sell for over $1500.

I own two LaMatta suede jackets, neither of them shearling, and they're both wonderful. LaMatta quality is great, so $400 sounds like an exceptional bargain.

Not sure exactly what you want to know about your purchase.

-do you want to know what shearling is? try Google
-do you want to know the brand La Matta? it's not bad,
-do you want to know if $400 for a La Matta shearling is a bargain? yes it's a bargain

Thanks for the feedback. The coat feels very nice. I just wanted to check in La Matta's quality and hence the value for the $$.

Does the pile length correlate with warmth, or is the issue more the density of the fur?

its either, or a combination of both.
if you want real warmth, try wearing it inside out. but you may die from the heat.
