I just watched Shankshank again the other night because I couldn't really remember it properly. For those who don't know, it's the #1 movie on imdb. It's one of the better movies I've seen but #1?

Just want to see what others think.

As good of a film as "Shawshank" is I simply can't put much weight into what others on IMDB think. I'd be willing to bet that a majority of those voters haven't seen that many movies filmed prior to 1970.

Rating movies is so subjective that getting attached to the actual ranking number doesn't make sense... I mean, anything in the range or top 50, you can just lump together. Considering the number of movies out there and different genres, tastes, time periods, etc, even getting something like a top 10 is arbitrary... Based on votes, one movie had to be number "one"

Shawshank was a satisfying movie for the most part because it was also manipulative and occasionally ridiculous. Yeah, yeah, everybody in prison is a saint who was either framed or terribly sorry for his crimes and makes up for it with a ghandi like demeanor. Except for the rare ****** and his small gang of toadies the average prison inmate has more humanity and decency than the average prison guard. As far as the warden dont even go there. Its a guilty pleasure movie. Dont spend any time thinking about why you liked it so much or you will be ashamed of yourself. They all should have hung themselves like that miracle grow guy.

This is clearly a TBS-related conspiracy

Whether or not it's #1, it's still a very good movie (if, as noted, manipulative and somewhat saccharine). I find it interesting that only Stephen King's non-horror work (Stand By Me, Green Mile, Shawshank) has been successfully adapted to film. I find movies like IT and Pet Sematary to be garbage, not mention the outlandish crap like The Mist, The Langoliers and Secret Window.

I thought The Shining, Misery (maybe more thriller then horror), and Carrie were all successful adaptations. Although I also enjoyed the Mist for what it was.

I think it's a good movie and found it quite entertaining. Don't know about #1 though.

If I had an IMDB list, Dark City would be my No. 1.
