I've recently gone retro with my shaving. I've gone away from the standard safety razor and I'm using a 'heavy' double-edge razor, like my Dad used. Also, I'm using a brush and shaving soap, not foam out of the can. I like the shave I'm getting and I wondering how many of you use a douible-edge razor. Also, does anyone use a straight razor? Is so, how hard are they to use and get used to.

Good to hear John. That is, in my opinion, the only way to shave. You will find that alot of us on SF are wet shavers and that many use DE razors. A good place to learn and share info. on the subject is the forum over at Badger & Blade:

I use a Futur, but I plan on ordering a progress after christmas. A good shave for me is one that doesn't take too much skin off my face because I don't like the sensitivity.

I have not used a straight, but those who have tell me that the transition from a DE to one is pretty easy since you know what angles work best for the different parts of your face.

I use a Merkur DE Classic with Feather blades. My soap is Taylors Lavander and I believe the badger brush is by Vulfix; the Super Badger.

However, I would like to try straight razors.

I also use a Merkur HD and Feather blades. I use proraso cream and a pre/post cream afterwards; and my brush is a Rooney super style 1 in medium. I made the switch in june, and have not needed to buy anything since - i used to buy shaving cream and blades every month. So the money i'm saving can now be spent on more clothing

how much sharper would you say the feather blades are in comparison to the standard merkur blades? i bought a merkur slant and it is really grating my face quite seriously as i've got a tough beard and fairly sensitive skin (apparently). i'm wondering if i should try these feather blades or just buy an HD and stick with merkur blades?

In all honesty i didn't find them to be that much sharper than the merkurs. My second wet shave was with one, i get a better shave with them, and very rarely cut myself. I also have a very tough beard and sensitive skin. Provided you get the angle right, and have sufficient lather, you won't scrape yourself.

There is a 'stigma' of sorts surrounding feather blades at some of the shaving forums, from what you read you'd think that they were akin to

rather than just a blade. Get your technique right and you'll be fine.

I've seen the straights that AoS has to offer in their Topanga store, and I'd have to tell you that you're better off ordering the same razor, but "shave ready" & cheaper.

I love DE razors. John, in fact, a 'safety razor' is what you are using. Whether a Mach 3, etc can be considered safety razors though, I don't know. I call them "cartridge razors".

Also, Reggs, if ya already have a Futur, I don't see why you need a Progress...

Then again...this is coming from someone who has 6 razors.


I use straight razor sometimes, but it is pretty difficult for me since you have to switch hands to get the other side of your face. Using your dominant hand, you start to think "wow this is easy, I don't know what the big deal is!", but once you switch....you will start to see why so many cut their ears and nose with these things.

Dig around for an old Gillette Adjustable DE. Works great after all these years (mine is a '65 model).

Edwin Jagger brush with Trumper's Sandalwood soap. Nice and smooth.

Overpriced Merkur razor. You're better off picking up a Merkur HD.

Unless you come down with a case of razor acquisition disorder, the Merkur HD can be the last razor you ever buy.
