Shaving Cream Question

I currently use a Gillette Fusion Power Razor with Gillette Fusion Shaving Gel (found at any grocery/drug store) or sometimes use Barbasol (Yes, the $1 a can stuff). I have always been interested in using a bit of a high end shaving "cream", but the only shaving "cream" that I've used was a brand called Alba and it didn't lather like the Gillette or Barbasol or Edge or anything lathers and foams. Are there any shaving "creams" that lather just like a can of Edge (If so, can you reccomend one) or are they all going to be the consistency of body wash?

They will lather, but you'll need a brush to whip them up with some water. Brands I use include:

Proaso,
Salter's
Trumpers
Truefitt & Hill
Prep
WARS
Art of Shaving

You'll have to search for them, none are widely available but most can be found on-line.

Then there are the artisan lines:

I like quite a few but, the one I use quite frequebtly is The Gentlemens Refinery. Great lather, stays moist troughout the entire shave! Here is a post about it!

I used Gillette Foamy shaving cream. I don't try any other brands of shaving cream.

You don't need a lather for a good shave, just a good lubricant for the blade. I heard it explained once that lather is mostly air, and air is a poor lubricant. I tried shaving oils a few times, but didn't like the effect of those on my sink. I settled on- and now order Ahava Foam Free Silk Shave (and the shower gel) by the box online.

Canned shaving foam or gel is death. Go for traditional soaps or creams that you whip up with a brush. Proraso, Tabac, Stone Cottage Soapworks, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Turtleship, &c., are all excellent products.

I agree with those who suggest good quality soaps or cremes over the aerosol canned jobs. I live in a particularly dry climate and so cremes are a better alternative for me as they tend to provide a thicker lather more easily than soaps. YMMV. I use Proraso in a can, for several years now. It's pretty much the same as my expensive Santa Maria Novella crema barba.

I have tried over 300 shaving creams and soaps. The expensive ones are not worth it - AdP, the mid tier not too bad - TOBS, Castle Forbes etc. Entry level such as Nivea are very good value.

this works for me. key: use the absolute smallest amount possible to cover your face while damp after washing thoroughly with a mild soap and warm (not hot) water after you have exfoliated...

I've been using Trumper's shaving soap for over a decade and it's fine. Wet your shaving brush, lather it up, spread the soap where you shave, and get the razor out. I haven't used a can of shaving cream in a long time and these soaps last me forever. Plus, with that brand of soap, you can reuse the wooden bowl in which it comes so you generate less waste.

I alternate between Taylor of Bond Street and Art of Shaving creams, both in sandalwood, in a bowl, and require a brush to lather and spread (I use a tweezerman brush, cheap and good).

may I suggest you also switch to a Safety razor. The combination will save you a lot of money and yield a much better shave.
