I know this is about the most heathen thing concievable, but since the tip of my black PAs toe is getting a little knicked and I can't be bothered to buy edge-dressing*, could I just carefully use a Sharpie permanent marker along the half centimeter in question? Keep in mind these are $30 used PAs off ebay.

*I believe AE edge-dressing is water-soluable anyway, no? what's the point?

I can't speak to the ethics of using a Sharpie on PAs, but the permanent marker is actually a great instant-dye that is very durable considering how easy it is to apply. However, few words of caution -- sharpies fade to a very ugly brown color when it does fade. Also, no idea how it reacts with leather.

Exposure to the elements will lead to the ink's discoloration, imo. Worse, it could bleed and stain your shoes.

It won't hurt anything, but you'll end up buying edge dressing eventually anyway, so...

If they're black shoes, I can't see any harm. But I can;t remember whether they're black shoes.

Threadjack: Edge dressing makes me think of my local shoe-shine shop in lower manhattan. I broke my arm a few weeks ago, so I've been totally reliant on them for shines. (what I've done is purchased a bottle of lexol for my office. So I condition my shoes with Lexol, let them dry a bit and then go downstairs to the shoe shine guys.)

But I've also acquire a couple (ok; three) pairs of shoes in that time, so I keep tromping in there with brand new shoes to be polished. I fear I'm getting a "reputation" in the shop.
