Before I head out tomorrow to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with my family in Montreal, I wanted to wish everyone on SF a Shana Tova (Happy New Year) and may the new year (5768) bring peace, health and happiness to everyone.

Shana means year. I am not really familiar with it as a person's name. There is a Hebrew name "Shoshana" which translates as Rose; I suppose Shana could be a nick name.

Shana was probably from the Yiddish "Shaina" (or a zillion spelling variants), which means beautiful and derives from the German "Schone".
