Shaggy dog jumpers, shetland sweaters

Hi there,

is anyone familiar with the details of shetland jumpers?

I bought three of them recently from Harley of Scotland with two of them brushed and one not brushed. Now I wonder why the brushing increases the warmth of the jumper or if I simply have different jumpers. The brushed ones are unwearable indoors right now, whereas the unbrushed one is completely fine.

Could it be different yarns? Or am I just a stupif beginner with regards to shaggy dog jumpers?

It could be a couple of things. Are the sweaters exactly the same weight, aside from being un/brushed?

Having a fluffier surface, all other things equal, increases a certain amount of loft in the wool - which might help to trap body heat a little more.

I have brushed and unbrushed Harleys. Same yarn but the brushed are much warmer.

I don’t know the exact science but as I understand it, it’s something like @Nobilis Animus stated above. A lofty surface traps more heat (presumably because the loose wool fibers cover the gaps between the knit pattern?).

I guess it is similar to goose feathers which keep the warmed up air.

I’ve found the Harley single brushed option through Bosie (shaggy is double brushed) is a happy medium.

Yeah. Brushed is going to be warmer for much the same reason that an open weave jacket is going to be cooler. No expert on thermodynamics, but I feel like a lot has to do with how easy it is for the heat to escape. Also how windproof it is.

The reason why brushed Shetlands are warmer is because you're creating a fire fit.
