Hello. I'm new and improving my dress wear. I have a good knowledge of "the rules" of dress but I'm not sure about brown. I have a new pair of shoes and they are a darker shade of brown then my belt. How much flexibility is there in pairing browns?

Thanks

That probably depends on who you ask. My own rule is, close enough is good enough.

I have two brown belts that I wear regularly; one similar to yours in the photo, and one dark brown. I think you need a dark brown belt with those shoes.

Brown resembles navy in its wide range of hues, especially with accessories. If you cover all of the popular tones -- cognac, toffee, mocha, mahogany, and dark chocolate -- you'll increase your likelihood of finding more spot-on matches between belts, shoes, watchbands, etc.

Concerning clothing, I'm big into browns. My brown sport coats, shackets, and suits pair well with contrasting shades of belt and shoes. And I like bringing gray shoes to an overall brown ensemble.

You don't want an exact match, it looks too considered. It would be like wearing a matching tie and pocket square!!

If it looks OK as part of an outfit It will be fine
