Are people actually spending less in light of the recent state of the economy? I live in Canada where it isn't nearly as bad, sure my investments took a hit, but it doesn't mean I'm spending less or saving more. Thing is with all the bad news I see everyday I almost feel guilty not saving more, as if maybe since everyone else is I should to. But my job/pay aren't really linked to the state of the economy so maybe that's just me that doesn't really feel the pinch.

I'm trying to cut back my spending in a big way, even though I haven't been hurt by the recession. I actually got a new job with a nice raise recently. But hearing all these stories of people in financial turmoil has made me think about how much money I've wasted on frivolous stuff (mainly clothes.) Plus the next year is going to be a good time to invest in property, so I want to try and save up a down payment for when something good comes along.

I've started carpooling it to work since I've been spending a fortune on parking and gas for the last few months Also, I've made it my goal not to spend any money on clothes for the next year, unless it's something dirt cheap (like a $25 pocket square.) I often find myself wandering into stores against my better judgment, luckily everything at local stores is crap right now, so it makes it easier to resist. Still, it's a tough habit to break, but I guess its just part of growing up and learning to be responsible.

Yes, much of my habits are due to the fact I'm running out of room to put my clothes and because I'm saving up to buy an apartment, but I've cut back even more over the past month or so as the economy has been going to hell and my billable hours have started to dry up and I'm starting to wonder what bonus time will be like at the end of the year...

Yes. In part this is due to just having returned from a European vacation. So there's that. But it's also in part to my wife's position being dependent on an upcoming government RFP, the contract then being awarded (well, someone will get it), and her being kept on the project (99.9% probability).

Once that happens next spring, things will be more certain. In the meantime, I'm holding off on new monks and a few EBay buys I'm tracking.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
