Sewing and alterations?

The only thread I found was really old and not very active.
But I've been thinking about buying a sewing machine to do my own minor alterations. Do any of your guys do this (like, fixing buttons, shorten sleeves, hemming pants and such)? Which one do you have?
Also, anyone have some recommended websites or videos to learn how to sew?
