Settle this dispute: tailor's mistake re shirt darts

I took a shirt in to a local tailor to reduce the waist. Instead of having the sides taken in, I opted for darts. When I got the shirt back, the two darts spanned the entire length of the shirt: from the side pleats to the bottom seam. Would you please advise whether this is standard practice? In my mind, I envisioned the darts only in the lower back...maybe 8-9 inches in length. Not only do I dislike the look of the longer seams, but now the circumference of the chest and upper back has been decreased.

I'm not sure what to do. First, is this my mistake or theirs? What is the remedy? If you remove the stitching, I fear the holes will be apparent. The shirt was a newish Borrelli, my new favorite shirt!

Shirtmakers have posted here many times that shirt darts (unlike jacket darts) are not cut through. Thus they can be shortened or taken out without harm to the shirt. Sewing holes are tiny and should close with one washing.

Take it back and ask him to redo it.

Darts are supposed to trim the shirt where the body is narrower; around the lower chest & lower back.

The body is wider in the hips, so the circumfrence of the shirt should be greater as well.
