A dispute exists among aspiring attorneys. Which is a better practice for a young lawyer: buying suits from Jos. A. Bank or buying suit separates from Macy's.

Equally despicable acts which could lead to disbarment...if not from the bar, perhaps from SF!

Agreed. However, the dispute arouse by way of X attempting to convince a 3rd party from going to a sale at Jos. Bank, and duly directed him to Macy's for the "better quality." Y chimed in that Macy's doesn't even sell full suits - only separates. Y says the quality is not better @ Macy's.

God, this place...

A lot of lawyers here wear Jos A Bank. And Macy's has a range of quality, don't they?

^It's like arguing over whether Wendy's or McDonald's has the better hamburger.

I'm not trying to be snobbish. Both places primarily sell fused, inexpensive (by SF standards) suits made in the third world. Bank's best may be a step up, but in the end, the suits at both places are likely to have more similarities than differences. This isn't a value judgment on buying from either place; I'm just talking about a qualitative comparison of the typical suit sold at each..

As with the hamburgers, it will come down to personal taste.

I agree. So what the response is saying is that both places suck, and its foolish to send someone to Macy's in search of "better quality" when that person was already headed to Jos. Bank.

I'd say that JAB is going to offer a more consistent product. They sell 2 or 3 lines that will be the same whether you are in a store or ordering online. Once you know your sizes and what you like, shopping is quite easy. Macy's, like any dept. store, has a very wide range, so it can be very difficult to figure out what you're going to want, plus each store sells very different items.

If the sales were right, I'd probably go for a Boss suit from Macy's over JAB, but if I just needed some damn suits, to be replaced later when I have more income, JAB's perpetual sales, plus their consistency is probably the way to go.

A standard Bank suit is going to be better than an Alfani from Macy's. Some of the better-quality/ higher-priced suits at Macy's will be better than anything at Bank. I would say the salesmen at Bank are better than the ones at Macy's on average.

+ 1, Indeed. Here is my two shillings on the matter:

Bank > Macy's in my opinion.

The best Macy's have to offer is a Hugo Boss suit perhaps, but at most stores the better selections mostly filter down to choices involving Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, so on and so forth. Hugo Boss is about as good as it gets at Macy's. And the consensus here on a Boss suit is that it is not bad as an entry level suit, but it is ultimately fused and expensive for a fused suit.

Bank - all their suits are fused, but some of their top lines have some semblance of canvassing and hence are probably better than your average riff raff you get at Macy's for the same price. Bank is not such a bad place for the pennyless or citizen struggling to pay his bills. At least here the value and price tradeoff works out in its favor. If you cannot afford Brooks Brothers or even Brooks 346 suit separates, Bank is an OK second choice.

I feel like you can end up with a decent suit at Macy's after some tailoring. At Jos. A. Bank, the jacket will be too long, and the shoulders will be too padded for what I would consider a wearable jacket.

Arby's or Taco Bell? Colt 45 or Thunderbird?
