I am intending to visit Mina in Naples in June and hope to get some things made up for me for a first fitting. So I intend to send some fabric to her beforehand. Do any of you know the best way to go about doing this to avoid trouble with the import/customs people?

Thanks!

If you're buying the cloth from a shop, get them to send it to her themselves. This will be easy if the shop is within the EU and they will know what to do. If you have the cloth yourself and you're outside the EU, I would suggest a courier over the postal system. As far as avoiding tax, I think that's something the courier company might help you with.

It's cloth I have in my possession. I live above a Fedex shipper though, so I will look into this!

You might also consider sending it to whatever hotel she is staying at on her current trip to the US. She was in NYC this week, and may be making another stop, so I'd check with her. That would seem easiest if you can catch her while she's in the states.

I don't know how exactly it works in Italy, but when it comes to sending goods to Spain it's better to do it by postal service instead.
When doing it this way then it's a matter of chance (luck) the package it's going to be stopped by Customs. But the chance of this happening with a private courier is considerably higher, for the simple reason that this way they can charge you around 20 € extra for the "service" of clearing customs, which of course you still have to pay (added to the 20 € fee).

So I totally agree that the best way is trying to buy the fabric from an EU company so you won't have to pay customs fees nor extra taxes and make them send it directly.

I am okay with it, I just would feel bad to put Mina through the trouble of paying these fees.

How are you planning to send your stuff? I need to drop by NYC from Philly to do that so I'll see.
