I've always thought these shoes were an oxymoron in the sense that they're patent leather, bot not balmorals. I think a highly polished Park Ave (also by AE) would be a more appropriate formal shoe.

This is the exact shoe that I wear.

Yeah, formal shoes are supposed to be pumps or bals. Whatever.

for a tuxedo shoe, as long as they are black patent or highly mirror polished, with a thin sole.
i think those are fine.

for me, elegant semi-formal shoes i dont count in bal or blucher as much as the shape of the shoe.
if the shape is nice enough and not blobby, then i dont mind.

i would not mind wearing one of those very elegant 2-eyelet derbies in a patent for a semi formal like that one from dimitri above.
