Ok, so going to a semi-formal event this weekend. First was going to wear just a dark suit, but now remember that I have this black velvet "dinner jacket" (1B, notch lapel, black satin trim around the lapels, side vents)

Would this work with a white shirt and a bowtie? what kind of pants? black or charcoal i am presuming? wool?

any tips or suggestions would be appreciated

here is my issue: the jacket is velvet with similar satin trim and velvet.. I am scared that it will look like I am obviously mismatched?

otherwise - do you wear a regular tux shirt with the funky collar and a bowtie? anything else to spice it up? I have an embroided burgundy silk vest, but I am assuming it wont go as well with a velvet dinner jacket as it would with a black suit or something...

I wouldn't worry about looking mis-matched; that's preferable to wearing a velvet suit. I assume that you don't have a regular DJ or that would be an option, so just wear charcoal trousers.

As for the shirt, I'd definitely do a turndown collar (no wing) and bowtie.

yeah, no regular dinner jacket, and the party is kind of more on the funky side, 80% of the men wear suits (and too many look like they just came from the office) and the rest rock the tuxedo.. So i thought the velvet jacket would look good. I might just downgrade to a black suit all accessorized though..

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
