Semi-formal attire in Toronto for an evening event

What semi-formal means would probably be different based on where you live. Up to now, I always erred on the side of caution and just went with a classic plain dark suit and black shoes for evening events.

wearing everything dark gets a little boring and so I must ask my fellow Torontonians, how much play would you do on your attire / shoes for a semi-formal evening?

To be specific, this is for a fashion week related event so I'd like to be a bit fashion forward.
