Sugar Cane AWA-AI Denim, 1966 Jeans, 1953 Denim Jackets, and Whitesville Tees

We've got a hot one this week from Sugar Cane and Whitesville.

Sugar Cane AWA-AI Denim release #1 is here! Here we have a very special 70/30 cotton/sugar cane fiber denim jacket made to showcase natural indigo dying techniques from the Shikoku Island of Japan. This jacket's fibers were dyed in collaboration with the Edo-Blue Revival Association, which preserves Japan's ancient dying techniques. These jackets have a natural indigo fiber warp, a natural weft, a natural indigo dyed deerskin patch, and discharge printed inner pocket flap facing. We also have jeans and two shirts from this same series dropping next week.

After taking a ten year break from carrying Sugar Cane’s 1966 jean we’ve decided to bring them back. This model is a classic cut modeled after what the original 501 was like in 1966. An amazing and timeless style; this cut stays true to the original from the rivets to the paper patch to the custom weaving of the period-correct 13oz double ring-spun selvedge denim produced on narrow shuttle looms, including a color and weave matching to the shade of blue utilized in the manufacturing of the original 1966 jeans.

We've always loved Sugar Cane's version of the classic 1950's style Type II denim jacket. They've gotten the denim feel right, the stitching is perfect, the iron buttons are classically reproduced, and the deer skin patch ages just as well as the denim itself. We're happy to have these back in stock at all stores.

This week we have a large Iron Heart drop of short and long sleeve shirts, super heavy 11oz t-shirts, jeans, socks, vests, and everything in between.

We have some very nice overdyed short sleeve chambray shirts, overdyed denim CPO shirts, indigo kersey shirts, 12oz Superblack denim workshirts, and a new run of those insanely heavy 11oz blank t-shirts in black. white, and olive. Along with these new items we also have a new run of the 633n Straight Tapered natural indigo jean, heavy medium-length socks, and black denim vests.

Pure Blue Japan Extra Slub Denim Jeans

New Pure Blue Japan! The EX-013 Extra Slub denim jeans are here. This 17.5oz denim is woven at a very low tension with a super short staple cotton, giving the fabric extreme character. These have a slightly higher slub level than their previous “Super Rough” series and with bit more waviness to the denim.

Can someone help me remember the brand or name of a shirt that Self Edge carried several years back?

It was a dark-colored button-down, and its placket had a comically large number of buttons. I vaguely recall something like 15 buttons, instead of the usual 5 or 6. It might have been a Japanese import. I saw a different shirt today that reminded me of it. I should have pulled the trigger at the time.

Rick Owens for Self Edge 16oz Indigo Black-Waxed Detroit jeans

The Rick Owens for Self Edge 16oz Indigo Black-Waxed Detroit jeans, they’re here. This is an all new denim developed exclusively for Self Edge in the Made in Japan version of Rick Owens’ Detroit fit as part of their PHLEGETHON SS21 season. We’re all familiar with black overdyed jeans, where the denim starts as indigo and is overdyed (aka, garment dyed) black for a unique washed out black denim which ages over time to become an interesting combination of black and indigo with wear. With this new release the fabric starts off as a heavy 16oz Japanese selvedge indigo denim which has been heat treated with a special black garment wax to give the fabric the appearance of a black denim. With wear as the wax wears off the jean will reveal the indigo denim beneath the wax in places of hard wear; this wear happens far faster on a waxed jean than an overdyed jean. We love the way these turned out, and are excited to offer this jean in what we think is the most versatile jean silhouette Rick Owens produces. We’re looking forward to further exploring the possibilities of this type of “overdying” as it’s an eco-friendly way to turn an indigo blue denim into black.

This Rick Owens release is exclusive to Self Edge and is a continuation of the first capsule which was released in the fall of 2019 as part of the LARRY collection. You can find these new Indigo Black-Waxed jeans at all stores and online now.

Hey @kiya, I own a TFH Type II 6002 that is fading with SUPER high contrast—not really my cup of tea—and I'm unsure I can turn that around at this point without aggressive washing to bring up the "base" color (unsuccessful so far). I remember this photo you posted on sufu:

Would a type II from Sugar Cane fade in the same way?

If you're not liking how your FH jacket is fading you will most probably like the way the Sugar Cane denim fades much better, it's a truer vintage style fade and less contrasty like how Flat Head's denim fades over time. I would give it a shot, and even with very little washing the SC jacket will fade in a more even style compared to the FH denim.

The Sugar Cane AWA-AI Indigo Capsule Collection

This week we have the AWA-AI Natural Indigo limited edition capsule collection from Sugar Cane made of some beautiful textiles they've developed with Japan's oldest indigo heritage studio. We have a pair of jeans, a denim jacket, and two summer-weight long sleeve shirts. All four garments are made using a combination of different indigo dying techniques and utilize both cotton and sugar cane fiber yarns on the jeans and jacket.

All four of these items can be found in limited numbers at all of our stores.

All are made of a long staple cotton mixed with slub yarns on vintage circular knitting machines for that authentic vintage hand-feel. New Seuvas Flannels & Moleskin Shirts

We've got two new Seuvas shirts and a restock of both of their chambray shirts this week.

One of our favorite shirt brands has ventured into the world of flannels and they’ve just dropped their second release. Seuvas come through with a shirt made of an original selvedge flannel complete with double-needle construction, gusseted side seams, and their signature single Amakusa pottery stone button as the only external branding. It’s no surprise that Seuvas is capable of producing such nice flannels considering all textiles and even the sewing is done in-house in their own factory in Okayama, Japan.

As part of Suevas’ new summer line they’ve also produced a shirt made of a beautiful 100% cotton moleskin fabric. This shirt also comes with their signature construction and ceramic button branding.

How much would you expect these to stretch in the waist? I have a pair of jeans that I like the fit of with similar proportions. They measure 12.25" front rise, 31.5" across waist (Worn plenty so this is post stretch). I was thinking a size 30 would do?
