I went into the Oakley store. They might actually be the mp3 playing "Thumper" model. Since that model includes an earphone, that actually might make sense. I wonder if they were developed first for military/defense applications and then they turned it into an mp3 player.

No, the earpieces are separate from the glasses. Oakley does not make communications equipment, only mp3 players on the Thump sunglasses.
