Looking at my ties, I only have a few that are striped, and I don't know all that much about the patterns. It's my understanding that there are some popular patterns out there including Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and something called the "life guards" (which I believe is red and blue?), but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

Are there any colors/patterns out there that are particularly essential or basic? And should I look for upper-left-to-bottom-right (to mimic the originals) or upper-right-to-bottom-left (to avoid offending actual members of these groups)? And what about English Reppe vs. Irish Poplin?

(I am probably overthinking this, but isn't that what SF is for?)

The only thing I know (or think I know) about regimental striped ties is that in some circles it is considered a little gauche to wear one unless you served in one of the regiments or were somehow affiliated with the unit. On the other hand there is an Army Benevolent Fund stripe that is really quite attractive which anyone can wear and part of the proceeds go to the...naturally...Army Benevolent Fund The Soldiers Charity. here's the link
