Hi,

My name is Marc. I'm a M.Sc. student in Anthropolgy of consumption at HEC Montreal. Roughly, it means I'm trying to figure itout why people consume the way the do by understanding the structure they live in.

I've been browsing the forum for I'd say one year and half and registered couple of months ago.

Since SF admins have accepted my request, I would like to set a discussion with everyone that would be interested, about Classic American Outerwear, and the perceptions you have of it and its imagery.

I'll do this for one of the courses I follow. I have to write a paper about it.
Every information I will use from this thread will be reported to admins and participants before I finally to hand in it. And I will make this paper available to people that would be interested in.

I would like to conduct the thread in a funnel way, going from your more general thoughts about the clothing & style to the specific imagery of it. It means that questions will be prepared as well as spontaneous, depending on what each of you would say.

The more you will participate the better it will be for me, so I hope the thread and purpose of it will be intresting enough.

So, let's get in the thick of things.

Here is the first topic: general things about Classic American Outerwear
and my first question is: what are your general thoughts about the trend? Are you interested in it? Not? Why?

I'd like you before answering to this question to give me some info about your age (range if you prefer), about your location and your occupation.

Many thanks in advance for your interest, and I hope your participation.

We first should define classic American clothing. Some would consider 1912 Levis classic Americana and some would consider the 1950s style classic. Are we focusing on a certain decade of clothing styles or are we discussing it as a whole.

Some may not consider 60s clothing trends classic and some may not consider 70s trends classic, while others will. I however think of the prime American clothing area as the 1950s.

We discuss it as a whole. You are right to mention that the definition of Classic American outerwear is hazzy, I'd say, and I'd like to hear how you define it. My only point is to focus on American brands that make outerwear products, the participants will define the "Classic".
Brands can say whatever they want about them, at the end of the day, you are the one that define them as Classic or not.

Am I clear enough?

Thanks for answering!

Not only coats, it includes any products made for outdoor purpose, from country brogues shoes, to coats, to technical jackts, wool mackinaw, etc.

Thank you.

also are we discussing the original clothing companies that made these pieces or are we discussing new designers that have set out to recreate them?

Mods or no, I am not sure I would consider a thread in this forum the appropriate venue for your scholastic research.
Also, the photo in your avatar leaves me somewhat disinclined to participate.

^+1!

The smart-ass quotient seems offputting.

What's with the finger in your avatar ID, anyway? I'd like to analyze that before we begin.

It is actually becoming more and more popular to use the internet for scholar purpose, since you can reach a lot of persons at the same time, and usually interested in the topic. It is part of an approach devlopped by a Toronto professor, Kozinets, which is called Netnography (Ethnography + Internet)

So you're willing to use any bullshit you pick up in a style chat room as your research? How scholarly is that, exactly?
