So I'm looking to buy a new scarf for around $100.

I was thinking Johnston's cashmere, but I've heard good things about the Begg/Drake's angora/lambswool blend ones. I heard they're just as soft as most cashmere. Is this true?

And I was also wondering if Burberry cashmere check scarves were actually that great or if most of what people are paying for is the brand.

I have 2 by Johnstons and love them. The cashmere is wonderful. Cashmere really wont vary too much on softness by maker, however the better makers will last longer without pilling.

Dont buy a Burberry.

I got a cashmere black watch scarf from Jos. A. Bank for Christmas, and I like it very much.

Burberry scarves are perfectly nice, although the tartan is completely played out. I've put mine in the vault to wear again in 20 years when it will be a coveted collector's item. Maybe.

I like the no-name Cashmere scarves. I own a Sak's brand Cashmere, and a brand I don't recognize that I bought off the B/S forums here. Both were $50 each. Great deal, and feels just like any other cashmere scarf. I suggest you scour the forums here... tons of great deals.

I wouldn't buy Burberry. You are paying for the brand and everybody and their mom owns one. its too played out at this point. If you must, go with the dark grey/charcoal check Burberry pattern.

We have a Johnston's shop in town and it's our go-to place for scarves. I can't comment on the Begg or Drakes scarves, as I don't own any, but do think very highly of the Johnston's ones. My wife has a lambswool Burberry grey nova check which I borrow now and again. I think it's pretty solidly made but pretty heavily marked up. If you want a checked or tartan scarf for warmth and quality of manufacture, I would go with a Johnston's cashmere above Burberry or Drakes wool/angora. I just think it's better value for money. I also much prefer the very very soft hand of cashmere, and prefer how cashmere feels compared to wool... Also much though I like Drakes products in general, I do also think that their mark up is probably quite high, too...

cioni2k and I both used the phrase "played out" in a simulpost about Burberry's scarves. So that's settled.

You can frequently find Columbo at your price point as well. I'd go with that over Johnstons.

I personally like supporting British manufacturers and crafts, so would buy Johnstons. They're also conveniently located 5 minutes walk from my office, so no need to scour the interwebz if I feel like a new scarf...

The OP should buy what he wants, but he seems to be searching for ideas.

Johnstons scarves that I have had, have not been as nice as my Columbo's. Johnstons have tended to be fewer ply, more coarse and not as durable at the same price point. Perhaps it was the specification of the retailer I bought them from.

Begg's lambswool and Angora are very nice, I got one for the Missus, but they are not as soft as cashmere. If you really have your heart set on nova check though....

Oh no I wasn't thinking of getting a Burberry scarf at all. I was just wondering that's all, haha.

I already have a navy Johnston's cashmere scarf, but I wanted a patterned one. How much are they usually? Because where I live, they retail for 195 CAD usually but they're on sale right now for 115 CAD. I see people selling them on this site for around 80 USD. I got mine from the Highland store for around 50 CAD.

Yes. This is true. If you can find Colombo (spelled with two O's not a U) at that price then grab it.

SierraTradingPost always has a decent assortment of Johnstons's, and if you use one of their frequent 30% off coupons, you can take one home for around $30. Good deal if you ask me.
