Have a couple of incoming suits - how much should I expect the good folks at customs to charge me?

What are they going to declare the value to be? You won't pay anything if the value is less than $400. And really, what's the value of a bespoke suit to someone else? If we're so unfortunate, so deformed that no Hugo Boss can fit us, that we have to get someone to make an orthotic suit for us, why should we be penalized again?

^^^ Unfortunately, none of the above comments are true. Import duty in the U.S. varies by product and dollar value--go to the customs website to be completely disgusted at how ridiculously abitrarily and extensively the U.S. government has chosen to tax imports. For example, mens leather shoes costing less that $200.49 are duty free, over that amount and you pay around 9% duty. Of course, the "brokerage service fee" (the party that paid the duty for you at customs) will get their cut--usually 30% of the total duty paid. So a $201.00 pair of shoes will set you back about $24.

Not sure on the rate for suits.

Don't worry--the U.S. has plenty over those too. For example, steel-tipped work boots? 37.5% duty. And on a million other assorted and sundry items. Just depends on which protectionist union is lobbying which corrupt member of congress.

In this particular case I'm so glad I'm in Australia then. <$1000, duty free and then buying from UK get to claim VAT back, but then again things purchased locally are at rip off prices.

Typically $200-$300. Sometimes when they ship using Royal Mail / USPS, I get charged nothing.
