Traditionally, you could only be a member of a crafts guild if you were a master craftsman. To become a member of a guild you were required you to produce a masterwork and this would then scrutinised by the master craftsmen of the appropriate guild. If this was deemed to be of suitable quality, he would then be able to become a member of the guild and be allowed to use the word master craftsman. This I believe was the way of the guilds in Europe which have their origin in the middle ages. The stages in England were: apprentice - journeyman - master craftsman In Germany I think: Apprentice - Geselle(?)- craftsmeister.

In Germany: Lehrling - Geselle - Meister.

In the old days, parents even had to pay the master to take on their son as apprentice.

As in England, a Geselle (Journeyman) travelled extensivly to different towns and worked for different masters.

The best thing that could happen to one of those lads, he came across a workshop where the master had died and the widow was running the business (quite common in those days). With a bit of luck he could get his feet under the table and into the bed and on top of it had a fully equipped workshop at his disposal.

This is still true today, and the manner in which most clothing blogs are established on the Internet.

In the good old days were sufficient tailor shops even in small towns to work for.
I think that widow thing happened usually during or after war periods.
In some of my older tailoring magazines you'll find announcements by widows of tailors offering what you described. If their husbands got killed in the war she was still young enough to remarry...
and hopefully still attractive enough!
Which brings us back to the "erotically enchanting grandmother"...

I feel that this page so far is feeling decidedly medieval and archaic.

Based on a tip from SF Junior Member iLookok's blog, here is something more contemporary: the 2010 True Religion Swimwear Collection.

Ouch...I have been kicked in the face by my German colleague for mentioning the "Uber alles" part of the chorus.

Tell Sator to watch the movie on the Baader group ,that is an interesting piece of history.

Oops. Yes, well, I meant in the more literal sense than historical. Poor Haydn. It's just that he has abandoned the There is One Drafting System and Devere is His prophet in favor of the Rundschau To Rule All.

He seems to have muttered, "Drape Pigs," spread his wings and flown back to the Satan Forum.

Have you seen the Action Directe film with Jean-Hugues Anglade? They filmed an assassination scene in the doorway of my apartment building when I lived in Paris. It was very odd to come home at midnight to that one night.

No , I wait for Mesrine to be available at my local Blockbuster.

I have really enjoyed the Baader movie...Action directe were just a bunch of amateurish lefties, a bunch of small timers....

There is a comeback of political movies since the banking crisis...

I feel that the discussion of French cinema represents a new low on this page.

Unfortunate, really.

I hope that we can make it to another page somehow, and the whole French movie thing will become a distant memory.

Well, it takes baby steps. The thread is too large.

Instead, if we can save each page, page by page as we go along, then perhaps there will be vindication.

My feeling is still that the energy level is too low at this point of the page. Too downcast. I suggest everyone revisit my earlier post with the girls in bikinis, then come back.

It helps that it's short.
