Santoni size question

Hi,

I found a seller who wants to sell me a pair of brand new Santoni shoes for around $250. The size is an 8F (length 30 cm - widest part 10.6 cm). He says the shoe equals a EURO 42.

Am I right that in the American shoe size system an F does not exist? At a UK shoe web site I found the following classification:

In the UK the Average Foot takes an F Fitting.

E Narrow Fitting
EX Half way between Narrow and Average
F Average Fitting
FX Half way between Average and Wide
G Wide Fitting
GX Half way between Wide and Extra Wide
H Extra Wide Fitting

Before buying I would like to get confirmed that size 8F is a UK size (the seller does not know). By the way, I am inclined to think that Santoni shoes in Europe use the UK size instead of the US size.

Please let me know,

Mike

It's not quite as simple as the conversion chart you found would suggest, since it depends on the shoe company. Whereas Trickers and Church's, for example, might designate what we'd consider a Medium (or US D) an F fitting, Edward Green and Crockett & Jones would designate this width an E fitting. Some Italian shoe makers (like Kiton, for example) use numbers that look like the UK system, but don't correspond precisely to the UK equivalents. I've found that a better way to determine fit (although certainly not infallible) is to get precise inside measurements--certainly length and, if possible, width at the widest point--and then compare these with those of good-fitting shoes in your collection.

Here's another--and really excellent--shoe-size conversion chart that was posted by a SF member (apologies for forgetting who it was):

http://www.geocities.com/handy_feet/shoesize.html

With this one, you can get the actual bare foot measurements that are about right with the various widths, along with the foot length that is approximately right, thus enabling you to relate the actual dimensions of your feet to the lengths and various widths. The way you use it is to enter one number in any box, and then click in any other box. This will cause all remaining boxes to show the corresponding numbers. For example, I entered an 8 in the "Size (UK)" box and then clicked on the "Size (PP)" box (for "Paris Points," or what we refer to as the European Size). This brought up a 42 (so the advice you received about the equivalence of these two is correct), but also all the other converted sizes and appropriate foot measurements for the various widths and the length.

For me, Santonis run a bit big. I normally wear 10.5 us, and had to drop to a 10 for the Santonis.
