San Francisco neighborhoods vs NYC

I was wondering if some of you guys who are familiar with both cities would be able to give me some comparable neighborhoods between the two. I'm looking to relocate to SF from NYC and I've only been to SF once, so I have no real grasp on the different residential neighborhoods. Can anyone provide the SF equivalents of places like the east/west village, LES, murray hill, meatpacking, etc. For reference, I live in the flatiron area now and have lived in Hoboken before, and ideally I'd probably like to find somewhere closer to Hoboken, where there's a little more room to breathe (should I also be looking at Oakland?). Thanks for the help.

Not sure if trolling.

There are no equivalents and you will drive yourself crazy trying to find reasonable comparables. Accept that NYC is NYC and SanFo is SanFo and they are as opposite as any two cities can be. You'll sleep better.

For a perspective on one man's descent into madness read the SanFo thread. There's some decent neighbourhood info there.

Not trolling, I realize there are no exact equivalents. I've been reading some stuff online about the different neighborhoods in SF online and was just looking to put things in a context that would make more sense to me, I guess. Like I read about the Marina in SF, which seems to be similar to Murray Hill, or how the mission seems to be similar to Bushwick/Williamsburg, that type of thing.

EDIT: I guess what I'm trying to ask is the type of people/demographic that live in each neighborhood and how they compare to an NYC counterpart.

Honestly, it's a losing proposition. While there are some superficial similarities between say The Mission and Williamsburg - idiotic facial hair and an elevated sense of self importance - they end quickly when you realize that the gulf between west coast and east coast hipster asshole is enormous.

Don't pick a place for the neighboury vibe, instead base your decision on the best apt you can afford. Trust me, unless you're spending in the 6-8K range you'll be seeing every part of the city in search of a decent place to live.

SanFo is small enough that no neighbourhood is more than a 10 minute drive. Oh yeah, get a car. The idea that it is a walkable city is the first lie you will come across.

FWIW- the couple of persons I know that moved from NYC to SF landed in/near Oakland. One for the ethnic mix and both for cost.
