Planning on being up in San Fran for a few days and was hoping some San Fran natives might be able to advise me on some good places to browse and shop.

I prefer independent stores, such as Unionmade, etc.

Any help you have would be great.

Thanks.

Check out The Hound, The Alden Shop (not really independent), and Cable Car Clothiers. The Hound and The Alden Shop are only 20 feet from each other. CCC is a couple blocks away. They're all in the financial district. Let me know if you need directions from BART.

Not a native, but:

Cable Car Clothiers
The Hound
On the Fly
Al's Attire is funky

There are a number of threads on SF covering this very topic.

Thanks guys.

I did do a search on here but didn't come up with much on here, but if you have a link it would be appreciated.

Anyone else who has an opinion on hot spots in San Fran please chime in.

Thanks!

Self Edge for ****-hot Japanese jeans.
A B Fits for jeans and stuff like Etro shirts.
Check out the sale racks in Neiman Marcus' menswear dept.
The usual suspects: Wilkes-Bashford, Barneys, Saks.

Hipsters hate when you call it San Fran. It's known as The City fwiw.

Also check out Wilkes Bashford. They sell teh Lobbs if that's your sort of thing.

A new store just opened in Hayes Valley called Welcome Stranger, a men's only brother store to another store called Azalea, right around the corner. Acrimony is also nearby, on Hayes Street, and the three or four blocks of Hayes Street between Van Ness and Laguna have several shops, a few specifically for men's clothes. If you're in the Union Square area, it's an easy, 5-minute bus ride. Catch the 21 at Market and 5th, across from the mall entrance, and it runs right down Hayes Street.

If Unionmade is your style, these shops are probably gonna be more up your alley than The Hound or Wilkes-Bashford.

A friend of mine is nuts about Brooklyn Circus, on Fillmore, but I haven't been yet.

Just wanna thank you guys again. Actually kinda surprised I have gotten this much help. I figured my thread would get buried pretty quickly.

In regard to "San Fran", I certainly don't plan on making that reference. It was actually more for brevity in typing, but I appreciate the heads up nonetheless.

I like the acrimony reference bc I think it's a place my gf might like cursing through too.

Also, are you interested in, or able to, have lunch in China town? I'm more familiar with Oakland China town so I can't give you a good recommendation, but I bet someone could.

San Fran and Frisco are the best ways to make it clear you're not from SF.

SF and San Francisco are the way to refer to it.

Only wannabe New Yorkers and other new timers call it "the City" and it makes true San Franciscans cringe.

Menswear shopping is not great in SF.
CCC and Alden Shop are good.
Wilkes has a very..(to me tacky)..brown and tan palette.
There might be some good shoes at Neiman's but I haven't checked recently.

Come to SF for the food and the view.

Sounds like a whole thread should be dedicated to "Proper City Names to Not Sound Like a Tourist".

Check out:
Jeremy's
2 South Park
San Francisco 94107

Steeply discounted high-end menswear (and womenswear) overstock
from stores like Nieman Marcus, Saks, Bergdorf, Barneys etc. Lately
the selection has been mostly jeans and casual clothing. In the recent
past one found Isaia, Oxxford, Brioni, Belvest, Zegna tailored clothing.
It's worth a look.

As for calling San Francisco "the City", in the Bay Area the term
is widely used. Maybe not in "the City" proper. I use it and I'm a
real NewYorker
