Saltworks Fit Question

So as luck would have it, I found a pair of Saltworks for a good price at a Barney's outlet store in Leesburg VA. It was only after purchasing them and wearing them for a bit that I realized the top part of the waist in back sticks out--giving me sort of permanent plumber's butt. I assume this is structural defect of the jeans?

Using a belt mostly mitigates the problem, but I was wondering if it was worth it (or even possible) to alter the waistband to fix this?
