Bump- been communicating with Bagus off and on for the past few months about an MTO pair of his "Combatant" boondockers. Priced between $250-300/shipped worldwide depending on the build. When compared to other options of this style boot (eg vibergs or wwii impressions), it seems to me this is the way to go (higher value to quality ratio IMO).

I'm pretty stoked to hear back from him within the next few months on whether he can source natty roughout CXL for my pair!

Anyone else wearing Sagaras these days?

Bumping 'cause I'm interested and they're relatively nearby geographically. Any other experiences with these guys? Did anyone manage to get them to use CXL or something nice rather than the CG leather they usually do?

I just made an MTO for the Imperial I in their Shell. Believe it's the Shinki Hikaku and they had both dark brown and burgandy in stock. ETA is 30 working days so we'll see how they come out.

They have shell? Is it Horween, and what's the price point like?

Negative, they have shell's from Shinki Hikaku. I tried asking how much each sheet cost but I don't think they understood what I was asking.

What was the price on the MTO shell imperials? I was definitely wary of the regular leather after seeing some of the wear-in pictures, but shells could be worth it.

I guess there's some interest in Indonesian brands and with the latest Massdrop for Chevalier, I'll provide some insight with what I'm doing with Sagara. Please note, I consider myself a relative newb and know I’ll probably get castrated by the guru's on here.

I got interested in the Imperial I, as I wanted something semi dress and similar to the Alden Plaza Cap Toe. After reading the reviews, I wasn’t really enthusiastic about the leather offering they had for sale and wrote to Bagus about whether they had any Shell Cordovan in stock. He replied saying they had some limited stock of Shinki Hikaku for MTO and also mentioned they only have enough to make about 15-20 boots. So I decided to take the plunge.

    Current Specs

    Article : Imperial I MTO
    Shoe Last : Edward
    Upper : Burgundy Shell Cordovan
Tongue : Standard - Burgundy Shell Cordovan - Lining : Burgundy Lamb Glove
    Lining : Burgundy Full area
Construction : Handwelted Goodyear Flat Welt
Outsole : Half Micro Rubber Sole
Heel : Leather Heels + Rubber Pad
    Size : 40D
Hardware : 4 Eyelets 3 Speed Hook Gunmetal Color
    Edge Trim : Antique Wine
    Engraving : -
    Notes :
    Progress : Goodyear Welt

Material - This is my first purchase for a Shell and being a MTO it’s probably a bad idea. Some of the regulars in http://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/ completely advised against going ahead with this purchase and they’re probably right. There’s so many things that could go wrong but I couldn’t resist. Consensus seems to be that Shinki Hikaku Shell is inferior to Horween but cheaper. I understand constructing boots with shell vs pull up leather is a whole different level but they confirmed to me that they do have experience with other Shell MTO boots. I saw some on their Instagram and they do look quite nice.

Here’s a picture of the 2 colours they had in Shell. Burgandy and Dark Brown and the edge trimmings.

It’s not clear about the leather board and I requested some information and pictures of it but they only notified me that it was leather. For the lining, I’ve read from other posts that it was quite comfortable and there was minimal break in period, but those shoes/boots weren’t made of shell and am expecting these to be really stiff. I opted for a micro/leather sole instead double leather for functional purposes as I’m in Darwin and there’s the wet season to account for here.

Sizing: The recommendation was to size down and they did offer to send samples to me to verify my sizing. I’m normally a 8E in AE so opted for the 7.5D. I regret not asking more questions about the Edward sizing.

Damage: 4.550.000 which was about $430 AUD.

I know this is far more expensive than the boots they have in stock but much cheaper than your average MTO shell boots.

I couldn’t get a breakdown of the cost. I was really interested to know how much per sheet the leather cost but I think got lost because of the language barrier. But I assume the MTO also increased the cost.

Customer Service: There were momentarily delays between the email exchanges and the language barrier was just a slight issue but Bagus seems like a genuine guy. I asked about visiting his place as I was interested in learning more about their manufacturing process but they didn't offer visitors. He did offer for me to come by and have some drinks with him to talk boots and even bring some boots. I might take him up on that offer.

The other guys were Agung/Yudha, who handle the orders, happily answered most of my questions and were really accommodating in terms of shipping/payment options and offering me suggestion about all the different options on the Imperial. They even gave me some pictures of my boots as they’re currently undergoing construction. I have zero complaints about their customer service.

Agung told me the camera quality wasn't great and I'm anticipating the color to be like the Instagram photo posted above.

Delivery: ETA on the MTO boots are 30-40 working days. I’m planning on have them shipped to Bali as it’s only 3 hours from here or maybe visit Bandung or Jakarta. I’m anticipating these to be finished end of March/early April.

Risks: A lot of them. As these aren’t custom made and MTO, I’m hoping the sizing is as accurate as what they recommend. Shell Cordovan doesn’t stretch, so if they’re too tight I could be screwed. In terms of value, I can’t comment on it yet.

This is all a learning experience for me, albeit an expensive one and I invite comments/criticisms on things that I should’ve asked or probably done more research on.

Did you manage to get a reply? I am looking exactly at the same thing, which is a MTO of the Combatant and make it similar to the Vibergs. Did he mention he managed to get natty roughout cxl? I've seen some issues regarding the quality of the leather but I feel like you can't really screw up with roughout.

Really appreciate the detailed write-up of the ordering process. I don't think this is a bad decision - it's essentially just a gamble that the workmanship is solid since Shinki cordovan, while not as esteemed as horween, is still a well-known brand that will deliver acceptable shell. Once you get the boots, I hope you do a write up of how they look and fit. Would really be interested in how the shell wears with age. Really wish their standard leather was of higher quality!

Here’s a few more pictures of the construction of the goodyearwelt. At this point. I was kind of freaking out about the colour of the boots at how light the burgundy was.

These are the final pictures of the boots that Sagara sent to me and how they look with the exception of the Trimming which I asked for a shade darker.

Here’s the original boots which I modelled it against. I think the copper eyelids would’ve looked better than the gunmetal but they didn’t have any available.

I guess I was comparing it to the Alden Jumper boots but the silhouette I think is must slimmer on the Alden’s.

They look great in the pictures and am going to Bali next weekend to pick them up and will post some fit pictures. Anyone recommendations on what to wear them with? Was thinking of pics with my raws.
