Alden has a cool shell cordovan/pebblegrain model that's sold on Shoe Mart's site:

I tried this exact pair in real life at the NYC Alden store.

Just not quite right. I think it's the main color, too orange.

    I passed.

Some nice examples in here, thanks. I'm thinking about having mine made on Alfred Sargent's new 54 last with a natural sole edge.

Can someone clue me in as to when it would be appropriate to wear saddle shoes. I get the feeling they are pretty casual and would be good with jeans or chinos, not sure if they would work in a more formal outfit. I am thinking of getting a cheaper black and brown pair for casual outings. Also, what is the difference between saddle shoes and spectators?

A saddle shoe is defined by the particular placement of the different piece of leather; always around the lacing and reaching back and downwards to the sole (the pictures illustrate better than I can describe it). As shown in the J&M example, this piece does not necessarily have to be made from a contrasting material.

Spectators on the other hand would usually be designed more like a cap-toe or wing-tip, but using contrasting materials.

Spectators are a subset of saddle shoe.

Not strictly true, since there are plenty of spectators which are not saddle-shoes. I would say that saddle-shoes were a subset of spectators, but there are also mono-tone saddle shoes which are not spectators. So technically the two categories intersect, and neither one is a subset of the other.

Great with khakis, great with Levis. I've seen them work well with seersucker. Hard to take them much for formal than that although I'm sure dark smooth leathers could be paired with suits if you knew what you were doing. I don't play golf but of course they're perfect for that.

Leather soles would allow you to wear them with odd jackets. Mine are Walkover brand, no longer made, and have red rubber soles which limit me to jeans and khakis.

Japanese school girls wear them with plaid skirts. [IMG]

Thanks. I'm most interested in knowing where the saddle shoe fits on the formality spectrum. Is this something you wear with shorts, like a white buck?, with jeans and khakis? I'm feeling that it is. How are other folks incorporating these into their wardrobe? It seems like in the 50's they were almost being used like a tennis shoe.
