And there I was thinking the Donegal tweed on the balmacaan took the (very knobbly) biscuit this year for most textured material ...

It's actually quite unique, because there's both more colour / shade variation on a micro and a macro level, than almost anything else we can lay our hands on. The yarn itself is marbled, and then it is twisted with two other complementary colours of also-marbled yarn, and then tuck-stitched so chunkily that there are little random patterns and contrasts all over the place.

I hope to have the crewnecks (which is what these are) online over the weekend. Quite a few have already been spoken for, especially in the smaller sizes, which is about the third time this has happened since the summer. a) we made less than usual because 2020 is a horrible year, but b) sizes XS and S have outstripped all others of late (we used to sell equal numbers of XS and XL, but the scales have tipped hugely to the XS).

The Chesterfield has landed, and speaking as someone who lugged two of them from factory to workshop this morning to get them photographed ... let me tell you they are heavier than they look.

This the midnight one: the sleeker of the two.

The cloth is a (heavy) merino hopsack. The yarn is two-ply, which gives extra twist texture (as in appearance) to the look of the cloth, as well as very high tensile strength and abrasion resistance. And it's 21-micron merino, which ... well, it has a tremendously supple handle. Incredible stuff.

The coat itself is significantly longer than the last year's Chesterfield, with a lower break and gorge to match. It also now has a pocket at the chest (a simple-looking but faintly strange jetted pocket with a fat lower lip) and a semi-functional belt. And speaking of jetting, the fly at the front is now constructed as a long jet, so the break fans open cleanly on both sides.

Online on Monday, I hope!

Is the Chesterfield roomy enough to fit over, say, a sports coat or should I size up for that?

It should be fine for that, in the normal size. It's cut as a fairly large and encompassing overcoat.

Which of the coats are best suited for east coast winters? I love all your outwear but am looking to prioritize warmth.
