Here's a pic of the light sheep Herdwick tweed on me.

I'm wearing an XS and I think the fit is as good as it gets.

It's a fantastic looking coat which garners lots of attention but I'll admit I don't reach for it as often as I should as I also have the green SF balmacaan which is just too easy to wear with everything (plus, living in Scotland, the cold weather demands the thicker, heavier wool of the balmacaan).

In fact, I've only worn this a couple of times. I feel terrible for saying this but it's so beautiful that I don't think I could ever bear parting with it...

Looks great.

The man who made these coats really went through it — as if 12 rounds with Mike Tyson.

It was more ambitious than we realised, making the trench with the Herdwick cloth, because the trench has a lot more going on than most of our other coats, in terms of panels, and the two-way bellows pockets, etc.

Even now if I mention it he flinches a little.

That does look about as good a fit as we could ever hope. Even if not worn I always find a worn-in trench a very satisfying thing to hang up and ponder. Not just ours, I mean — any trench will do! I once went to a museum in Belgium which had a trench coat display and it always casts my mind back to that.

All these pics of the Herdwick trench have inspired me to post my very own! This truly is a special coat, Paul. The tweed is tough as nails and pairs so well with the utilitarian philosophy of a trench coat. This one is a S in the darker sheep colorway and it fits perfectly. I'm pretty layered with probably 2 shirts and a thick sweater here and there's plenty of room to comfortably move.

Probably February, or March at a stretch. There's the engineer and safari jacket before that, and the work jacket in around the same time, too.
Not to get ahead of ourselves, but where on the yearly timeline do things like rain jackets, cotton balmacaans, trench coats, etc fit? More like late summer / autumn?

Also, reporting from the frigid northern US: wore my ulster (buttoned all the way up, collar popped) on a walk of over half an hour in 9 F (about -13 C) weather. Coat held up great and kept me warm and toasty. Beast of a coat.

We don't have a set schedule, and this year the only guarantee is the trench coat in weatherproof ripstop, which we hope again to make mid-spring to topup the sizes currently sold out.

There's half a chance we'll try the raincoat in the same cloth in the second half of the year.

The balmacaan in cotton I think is a thing the past. The raincoat and duster have put that one to bed.

And very happy to hear the Ulster is working well in such obscenely cold weather. Crikey.

You Herdwick trench coaters — there are dozens of you!

Well, maybe a dozen.

We're working with the weaver now to get an early start on the batch of Herdwick this year. It might be that we make just the one colour (rather than light and middling and dark sheep) and throw all the yarn into one blended mix for maximum and extreme Herdwick chaos.

Never seen the dark sheep trench in the wild, but that is a looker. Thanks for sharing.

I think a mash-up Herdwick would be fantastic. And selfishly, as applied to the field coat, which has been away 2 years now I think?

I have to say the Balmacaan in Hopsack tweed is doing a great job in North West England (-5 today).

I’m only posting this as I know Paul and Sarah have no more scarfs this winter. I found a scarf from Mourne Textiles who produce the cloth for the Balmacaan and the rust goes really well with the Bracken coat. If anyone is interested it’s available here:

Here’s a temporary image I’ll be removing at some point (as I’m shy ☺️).

Hello everyone, I'm hoping to sell a balmacaan I bought in October 2022. It's made in a blue donegal tweed, size small. I've included a few photos, but don't really feel any of them capture the color well. I'm happy to take additional photos for anyone interested. I never wore this out of the house; it's brand new. Asking $600 shipped within the US. View attachment 2312011 View attachment 2312013 View attachment 2312015
I’m interested! I just sent you a DM.
